Primary Climbing

This was a great event for the primary schools of Sheffield to showcase their top 6 selected climbers in the bouldering competition, held at the Mini-Works.  each school had been given 1 session before the event to familiarise themselves with the wall and some of the climbs, but the routes on the day would be unique and very challenging for all the climbers. Many schools attended with everyone getting a free chalk bag courtesy of Wild Country.  The children loved their new accessory and made full use of it! All the children had 3 attempts at 10 climbs, each worth a maximum of 10 points, which meant a lot of climbing!  There was also a bonus hold worth 3 points for anyone who could get to it but couldn’t complete the climb.  The prizes on the day would be awarded to the highest scoring 3 boys and girls, a overall highest place team prize and a special prize to be selected at the end! The climbers had just under 2 hours to complete all the problems and score as many points as possible.  With some climbs being much harder than others it really tested all the climbers, with some really tiring them out.  It was great to see their overall enthusiasm and sheer determination to complete the climbs even after 2 hours!

The Results

When all the scores had been sorted and checked we had 3 top placed girls but we had a tie in the boys category, which meant a climb off between the two!  The climb off was to be between Frances of Bradway school and Ahmed of Wybourn school.  As both has got such high scores a harder problem was chosen for the 2 to finally declare one overall winner.  With each climber in isolation whilst the other climbed it was a tense final climb for the 2 boys.  Both showed impressive determination after being tired from 2 hours of climbing and showed why they had made it to the climb off! In the end the overall results were…. Boys 1st  – Ahmed Alkhobani – Wybourn 2nd  – Francis Stapleton-Varga – Bradbury 3rd  – Shaun Hartley – St Thomas of Canterbury Girls 1st – Emily Hall – Bradway Primary 2nd – Allison Sibley – Bradway Primary 3rd – Grace Wilson – Bradway Primary School 1st – Bradway Primary 2nd – Meersbrook Bank 3rd – Wybourn Primary   A huge congratulations to everyone who took part it was a great competition and great to see so much climbing!

Secondary Competition

IMG_20130704_133659 In the afternoon we moved on to the secondary schools with 10 new problems and a higher difficulty level.  This would really work towards challenging the older climbers but we saw some amazing climbing because of it.  The schools worked in the same format as the primary competition with every school trying to gain as many points as possible for their climbers and teams.  With a large spread of difficulty on the secondary climbs it was important for the schools to select which climbs they spent the most time on as some would get them easy points and some would really tire the climbers. With some of the UK’s top junior climbers attending we expected to see some amazing climbing and were not disappointed to see Izzie Hough get a perfect score overall!  A huge congratulations to everyone who took part and gave the climbing a go.  it wouldn’t have been such an amazing competition without all your enthusiasm. The Results Boys 1st – Ben lee – Tapton 2nd – Joseph Kiggins – Tapton 3rd – Thomas Lee – Tapton Girls 1st – Izzie Hough – King Edwards VII 2nd – Erin Moore – Bradfield 3rd – Pippa Watkin – Bradfield
