Across 2 days and 8 hours of teaching, the Sheffield Hallam Students managed to successfully deliver a range of events and activities for the year 3 students of Norfolk Primary School. Beginning on Thursday morning, the excitable students were given a varied range of sporting obstacles to overcome that cater to each of the principles of skill related fitness, from careful balancing drills to calamitous coordination races. By injecting a competitive angle to proceedings, each of the 7 teams consisting of 7-8 years of age were eager to perform to the best of their ability, resulting in a fantastic display of both participation and effort from all students involved. The session concluded with a fast-paced game of dodgeball to wrap up a successful day of physical activity.

The following day, the plan of action was to implement a more sport-specific schedule that would allow the returning year 3 students to demonstrate the skills they had used the previous day within a competitive sporting environment. The chosen sport was bench-ball, which was used as a catalyst to develop skills and attributes that can be transferable to a range of sporting activities. With the session focusing heavily on passing and movement, the game situations were geld within a confined space, provoking movement if a team wishes to be successful. Each of the 4 teams of Norfolk Primary students were quickly able to grasp the pass-and-move nature of the sport, enabling competition to thrive. By introducing a competitive angle, the students were able to understand and respect the consequences of poor movement and the rewards that effective movement around the court can offer.

We’d like to extend a huge thanks to the teachers at Norfolk Community Primary for allowing us to come in over the course of 2 days to deliver an exciting, enjoyable (and often hectic!) day of physical activity.
