Day 1
The first assignment given to the 2018 Sheffield Hallam placements students was an exciting one. To plan and deliver a day of enjoyment, sport participation and competition at Emmaus Primary School. The day began with a bang at 9:40am with a multi-skill event delivered to an excitable group of year 3 students. Focusing on the sport of cricket, the session consisted of a trio of stations, each catering to the skills required in fielding, bowling and batting. Upon completion, the Links SSP coaches asked if the session was enjoyable, which was swiftly met with a barrage of positive responses and a sea of smiling faces.
During the lunch period, the placement coaches had the opportunity to deliver a short 20-minute session to the year 4 students. Bench-ball was to be the sport of choice which, thanks to its competitive element and limited time, resulted in a frantic session of chaos and creativity, with the students finding new innovative ways to claim victory. This set the year 4 students up perfectly for lunch.
Upon returning for the afternoon, the year 4 students of Emmaus were then given the opportunity to demonstrate a wealth of skills and abilities that are suitable for a whole host of sports. From precision basketball events to speedy relay races, the exercises presented gave each student the chance to excel at any given sport. The day concluded with a game of unstructured dodgeball, to allow the students to simply have fun. After 2 games of chaotic participation, the children departed the sports hall at 3pm with a little less energy and a lot more excitement.
Day 2
Ready and prepared for another day of sport, the objective for the Sheffield Hallam placement coaches was simple: to replicate the success of the previous day’s events. Starting bright and early, the team set to work on preparing a fun-filled morning of activity for the year 3 pupils. Participants were able to get to work showcasing their skills in balance, coordination, speed and agility, with a series of challenges presented to them within a 1-hour lesson. Despite an impressive showing from everyone involved, it was Team 4 who emerged the victors of the morning competition.
Following a 15-minute break, the year 3 students of Emmaus Primary returned to the sports hall refreshed and ready for competition. The Links Placement students had set out a collection of races, each demonstrating a different skill. With extra points being on offer for encouragement and sportsmanship, the teams eagerly cheered for their fellow competitors until a winner was crowned, bringing the two-day multi-skill events to a close.
