Coaching Blog

Hello, welcome to the new blog where we will have coaches from Links write a little about what they do, how they do it and how they got into it in the first place!  Hopefully you will find this interesting and informative!  We will be having posts every Wednesday so keep checking back for the latest post!   To start us off this week we have Russell who is one of our Sport Coordinators for the Primary Special Schools.  Russell has been with us for roughly 3 years now starting off as a sports coach and working up to his current post.

[blockquote align=”center”] Russell: I have worked with Links for 3 years starting with them when I began university and my role now is as a Primary SEN Sport Coordinator.  I began in a voluntary role for the Ready, Steady, Coach programme that they run each year.  This gave me my first opportunity to work in a Special School as we were lucky enough to work with Dawn Wood and Faye Ruddelston in Seven Hills.  This was a great insight into how rewarding work in Special schools can be and I am lucky enough to still work and speak to some of the children I met 3 years ago. After gaining a lot of voluntary experience at a variety of events and coaching sessions I began mainly working in Special Schools such as Mossbrook, Woolley Wood, Seven Hills and Talbot.  This gave me a lot of experience in the area and led to my current position.  I still work in mainstream schools delivering cycling and occasionally mutli-skills or Orienteering. My current week is very mixed in what I do as I work at least 3 half days in my primary Special Schools, I have half a day to complete planning and paper work and then I have another half a day to complete web tasks/social media as I also maintain the website.  Most of the time I am busier than this schedule and I go into the schools for extra sessions and after school clubs where needed.  This job allows me to be flexible as I run my own schedule and so can rearrange or fit schools in depending on what I am doing or where I can commute to within a certain time.  This allows Links to offer as much sport as possible and allows us to engage with as many children and staff as possible! Alongside this weekly schedule I work closely with the other SEN coordinators Dawn Wood and Helen Solly to arrange inter-school competitions and how we can integrate them into all our schools schedules.  This will hopefully make it an exciting year for the schools and help them achieve their goals.
