What sport do you coach?
Dance
Why do you coach/what drives you to coach?
I love coaching dance for many different reasons. Most importantly, is the impact you make and the changes you see in the children/adults that you coach. It’s the small things that coaching brings that makes it so worth it. Simply seeing a child’s face light up when they know you have you at school that day, or when you teach them a new skill and they go off and practice to show you the next week. It’s all about inspiring, I inspire them and they inspire me. To see some children not wanting to participate in a dance lesson the first week to been on the front line a few weeks later makes the hard work so rewarding. Children have this magical energy, creativity and drive that is just so special to work with.
Do you have any coaching role models?
I don’t have one coaching role model but a few. Growing up I was very lucky to have some very passionate and educated teachers/coaches shaped me into the dancer and coach I am today.
What are your coaching aspirations/goals?
My coaching goals seem to change each year. I always aim to keep my sessions interesting by not delivering the same thing each term, which means I am always learning. This may be through research, taking courses or just talking to other coaches. Long term, my coaching aspiration is to keep dance interesting for everyone and promote the benefits dance has is education.
If someone was interested in coaching, what would advice would you give them?
If you are passionate about a sport then coaching is easy. The love you have for what you do will always shine through in your session. The advice I would give is that when coaching children, is always be energetic and uplifting: The energy you give is the energy you’ll receive, so always be positive, encouraging and enthusiastic.
